Meadowlark Gallery: The Artist Biographies

Jim Stevens

Jim Stevens was born on September 13, 1939. He grew up in Bozeman, Montana and began oil painting in 1960. He is mostly self taught and admires the work of the early California and East coast artists. Jim taught at art centers in Bozeman and Helena for some twenty years and has served as a juror and workshop instructor. Jim prefers to paint on location, painting small studies or starting full size works to be finished in his studio. He recently has begun to seriously paint still life in the old chiaroscuro style. Jim Stevens has illustrated two books and several corporate publications. Art has been an important part of Jim's life for more than forty years. However, he has been known to trade a fly rod for his paintbrush on occasion.
